Beespace

“Apartment One gave life and dimension to Beespace, going beyond my wildest dreams and turning an idea of a nonprofit incubator into a brand in the most beautiful and unique way. They have proven how brand and design can truly profit the world.”

Marissa Sackler, Founder, Beespace

Project Details

Led by founders Marissa Sackler and Simon Isaacs, Beespace is a new concept nonprofit incubator, helping to identify and launch the next generation of innovative nonprofits. By providing shared services, office space, and support from a dynamic community of innovators and leaders, Beespace is poised to launch the best and the brightest nonprofits looking to Profit the World.

We worked intimately with Interim Executive Director, Simon Isaacs from the ground up to develop the brand from the core brand positioning and brand manifesto to the visual brand identity, print collateral, website design, and office branding. We crafted an aspirational brand motto, Profit the World that champions the values, purpose, and intent of the organization. Alongside this process, we developed the core brand identity looking to distill all Beespace has to offer into a visual brand language from the logo and typography to the photography direction and icon development. It was essential that the visual identity embodied the progressive spirit, vibrant nature and energetic intentions of the organization.

One of the most exciting pieces of this brand is the Profit the World mural created to live permanently in the space. The mural is a dynamic and abstract expression of the internal ethos, energy, and values of the incubator and is a visual feast to enjoy and inspire over and again.

We are honored to be a part of bringing this incredible brand to life and look forward to continuing to support the organization and it’s incubees as they forge forth to Profit the World.

Blue Hill

“Apartment One has the unique ability to think strategically and execute creatively. They ask smart, insightful questions that lead to thoughtful, innovative design solutions. They consider the marketing challenges and present the creative possibilities. All of this is delivered in a spirited, collaborative way. What a joy to work with. . .”

Laureen Barber, Co-Owner, Design Director, Blue Hill

Project Details

Blue Hill brings a taste of their exquisite, award-winning dining experience to your local dairy aisle with the launch of their savory yogurt line, Blue Hill Yogurt. Laureen Barber, co-owner and Design Director of Blue Hill, approached us to work with her to bring this exciting brand to life in the yogurt branding, packaging, print collateral, and website design. It was important to Laureen that the brand felt authentic to the Blue Hill brand and that it had it’s own unique identity that would stand out in a crowded yogurt dairy aisle.

From our first meeting, we were mutually inspired by the aesthetic of a vintage seed packet line for the yogurt brand and packaging. The artisanal quality of the packets meshed with the farm-to-table Blue Hill brand and felt like a natural direction for this product line. We worked with the talented Mary Woodin to craft vegetable illustrations and brushstroke lettering for each flavor. Juxtaposing the warmth of the illustrations and the cool slate struck the right balance of authenticity and refinement at the heart of the Blue Hill brand. We added level of whimsy and depth to the product experience by adding a surprise message underneath the colorful and vibrant lids.

For the product launch, we worked with Laureen and her team to develop a press kit package utilizing wooden boxes filled with samples of each flavor in small weck jars and a stack of cards that told the story of the brand and introduced the flavor profiles: Beet, Carrot, Tomato, and Butternut Squash. We worked with photographer, Ben Alsop to capture images that highlighted the natural beauty of the quality ingredients. The brand storytelling continued on the website where we aimed to take viewers effortlessly through the full experience of the yogurts — from the heritage of the Blue Hill dairy farm to the 100% grass fed quality of the milk to the tasty, savory flavor profiles and how to use the yogurts in everyday recipes.

Fatherly

“Apartment One has been an outstanding partner in immediately capturing the visual identity of our brand and beautifully and effortlessly translating the design across a responsive site and mobile-optimized email. I will sing their praises to everybody.”

Michael Rothman, Co-Founder, Fatherly

Project Details

Fatherly, a parenting media platform for and by dads, was born when co-founders Simon Isaacs (a soon-to-be dad himself) and Michael Rothman realized that, while there was an abundance of parenting content for moms, there was no material geared towards expectant dads. They aim to deliver a compelling blend of general-interest content with product and service recommendations keyed to the age and stage of each user’s children.

We worked with Simon to develop the end-to-end brand experience, including the core visual identity (logo design, iconography, typography, graphic elements), corporate stationery, user interface design for the site, email templates, print and marketing collateral, and promotional merchandise. Our goal was to create a brand for guys who ‘happen to be dads’ and an online experience that was easy to browse, engaging to explore, and always fun to read. The seahorse you see in the brand’s logo (integrated with a subtle ‘F’) is a known symbol of modern fatherhood, being a rare example of a species in which the male carries and births offspring.

Fatherly has received a warm welcome and excitement from readers and media alike. We look forward to continuing to build the brand and online experience in the months and years ahead.

Serenbe

“They brought deep creative expertise to the table and exceeded our expectations, and that’s not always easy to do. We see them as long-term partner as we build out the Serenbe community and brand.”

Steve Nygren, Founder, Serenbe

Project Details

Serenbe is a 1,000-acre, sustainable community outside Atlanta, GA that offers an alternative to the hustle and bustle of city living. Set in a breathtaking landscape of rolling hills and lush greenery, Serenbe offers a simple, vibrant, and rich setting for anyone seeking a life among the trees, from those who come for a short visit to people who stay a lifetime.

Steve and Marie Nygren first discovered the property now known as Serenbe over 20 years ago on a weekend outing with their children to the Georgia countryside. Their vision for Serenbe was to protect the beautiful rural land outside of Atlanta and to raise their children in a nourishing environment. It is now a place that hundreds call home and where those who live or visit are reminded of our connection to others, to nature, to the arts, and to ourselves.

We worked closely with the Serenbe team to develop an online experience that would provide a taste of the beauty, richness, and wonder of Serenbe. To that end, we showcased the breathtaking photography of the property as the leading feature of the site design. We restructured and simplified the content and information architecture of the site to display its core values and offerings in the most digestible and inviting way for both new and recurring site visitors. At Serenbe, there are magical surprises hiding around every corner; in this same spirit, we included discoverable interactions that surprise and delight as well as help illustrate the warm and inviting nature of this enchanting place.

Aeras

“Apartment One’s creativity in reimagining our brand identity was transformational. They truly captured the intersection of vaccine research innovation and the urgency around the global tuberculosis epidemic to elevate the way we position Aeras and communicate our unique value.”

Kari Stoever, Vice President, External Affairs, Aeras

Project Details

Aeras is a nonprofit biotech advancing the development of new tuberculosis vaccines for the world. Aeras’ mission is to develop new TB vaccines that are affordable and accessible to all who need them. When we started our work with Aeras, the organization sat at a key point in its history and was poised to standout as one of the most innovative and impactful leaders in global health and vaccine discovery. With a refreshed brand and effective visuals communications, Aeras could embody the possibility and promise of its work and people.

Our task was to strengthen Aeras’ communications with a refreshed brand and consistent, professional and differentiated visual identity system. It was essential to reflect Aeras’ innovative work and to engage our target demographic of scientists, policy makers, academics, and other opinion leaders. We created a revitalized brand system that also included an information graphics system that enabled Aeras to distill complex data into communications that connected with our audiences. Our brand refresh approach focused on the cross-section between science and humanity and on the key brand themes of innovation and impact, global collaboration, leadership, and scientific possibility. The visual brand language starts with the professional yet warm Aeras logotype, the A logo mark that speaks to their collaborative approach as well as the progress and innovation of their work, and continues through the modern information graphics alongside beautifully human photography style.

We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with Kari Stoever, Simon Isaacs, Annemarie Leadman and the Communications team at Aeras to develop this new brand language that will support and strengthen Aeras’ critical and important work around the world to make TB history.

Brooks Brothers

“Just like a top notch journalist, Apartment One embeds themselves within your creative culture and strategic thinking. They learn who your brand is, ask questions, devour existing assets, create new ones, and churn forth clean, clear, thoughtful creative – all with a light, joyful spirit. The whole team is truly a pleasure to work with.”

Marko Bon, Global Director of User Experience, Brooks Brothers

Project Details

For generations, Brooks Brothers has dressed some of our nation’s most influential figures. An American style institution since its founding in 1818, the venerable brand has consistently championed core values of timelessness, quality, and authenticity.

The Brooks Brothers Direct Team enlisted us to help rethink the web experience from the ground up. We developed and designed the customer-experience strategy, information architecture, and front-end design for the new site.

Our team collaborated to develop innovative features that embraced personalization and storytelling throughout the site. Highlights of the new experience include a new online configurator for suits, dress shirts, and tuxedos and a redesigned online dress shirt fit guide.

We are honored to be a part of this ambitious website reinvention and look forward to continuing our work with Brooks Brothers.

Artspace

“They work with you as if it is their own brand and company. Don’t think of Apartment One as an outside design firm, think of them as your partner in creating and building a long-term brand and user experience. They deliver exactly what they promise and become part of your team.”

Catherine Levene, Co-Founder and CEO, Artspace

Project Details

Artspace believes that great art should be available to everyone, regardless of experience or geography. Catherine Levene (former COO of DailyCandy) and Christopher Vroom (founder of Artadia: The Fund Art and Dialogue) partnered to build an online contemporary-art marketplace that easily allows art lovers to become art collectors.

We developed the core brand identity, e-commerce website, print and marketing collateral, and consumer packaging. We sought to create a visual language that conveyed sophistication and refinement while remaining accessible–and a framework to showcase the art, not compete with it. The result: a largely black palette infused with a neon pink that brings vibrancy and modernism to
the brand.

We collaborated with our user-experience partner Tamara Adlin to develop a strong engaging customer-driven online experience. We utilized this foundation to develop the interaction and
front-end design for the website, including custom features like the “view in a room” application.

Artspace has been featured in Tech Crunch, Fab.com, Huffington Post, Forbes, Fast Company, and other notable publications.

Moomah

“To say that they were enthusiastic and inspired still does not speak to the level of commitment of creative thought and passion Apartment One brought to my project. They made me believe that anything was possible, and they showed me that it was.”

Tracey Stewart, Founder, Moomah

Project Details

When we first met with founder Tracey Stewart, she expressed a desire for Moomah to be a space that would encourage creativity and connection between parents, children, and friends. A place where imagination and wonder would reign. We sought to develop an organic, dynamic brand language to translate Tracey’s vision for a multigenerational collaborative space into a memorable brand.

We first looked to identify the essence of Moomah and simplified it into four core values: connect, create, discover, and nourish. We then developed a robust visual brand language that would convey those ideals, designing variations of the logo with everyday objects that represented each value.

We pushed the boundaries of traditional identity development by extending the brand’s identity beyond the logo and name and creating an ownable graphic vernacular that encapsulated the whimsy, wonder, and heart of the brand.

We’re thrilled that our work with Moomah has been recognized by our peers in the design community by AIGA’s 365/31, How’s International Design Award, Print’s Regional Design Annuals, and in many design blogs and publications.

Adlin Inc.

“Apartment One found the real me in my business. I was so stuck. And now I’m so proud to show off branding that reflects the best of what I am and do.”

Tamara Adlin, Founder and President, Adlin Inc.

Project Details

Tamara Adlin, a Customer Experience guru known for her wealth of eCommerce experience and expertise, approached us to revamp the brand presence of her consulting company, Adlin Inc. We focused on two key areas of client interaction: her company website and business card.

Tamara’s bold, dynamic personal style is a key reason she is beloved by clients and colleagues alike. These unique qualities were the inspiration for her new logo, which we executed in her personal handwriting—an approach that imbued the result with her vibrancy and individuality. In designing the user experience and interface, we took cues from Tamara’s own work process, which utilizes ‘whiteboarding’ and post-its to solve and strategize around complex user-experience challenges. With those elements in mind, we created a fun, flexible, whiteboard-inspired framework in which to showcase her site’s various offerings, including consulting, persona development, UX Pioneer interviews, and her personal blog.

We created custom letterpress cards that were edge-painted on all four sides with the four colors showcased on the multi-colored website. Tamara frequents digital and UX conferences and it was important that, much like her, her card would stand out in the crowd. We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to bring such a special company and identity to life.

Rock the Vote

“Exciting and inspiring young people in today's political environment is no easy task. Apartment One crafted an incredibly powerful campaign and through their creativity, vision and commitment are enabling us to continue motivating a new generation of citizens.”

Chrissy Faessen, VP Marketing & Communications, Rock the Vote

Project Details

We teamed up with Rock the Vote and Simon Isaacs to develop the brand and creative for the “We Will” campaign, one of the largest non-partisan youth voter campaigns in history. With Rock the Vote’s goal of registering 1.5 million voters and engaging millions to turn out this November – we created a compelling and engaging campaign that empowers youth to make their voice heard in the coming election.

As voting rights are under attack in states across the country, the We Will campaign is aggressively optimistic, highlighting the war on voting, while reminding young people of their collective power. The campaign combines messages such as “they want us to keep silent, we will be heard,” and “they want us to back down, we will be brave” with raw, youthful photography and hand-drawn graphical elements, to illustrate the voice of the people and create a visual dialogue between “they” and “we”. The campaign visuals were kept minimal in color and graphics to hero the They/We messaging. We were inspired by trends in youth activism and branding to build a campaign that reflected the vision behind We Will, stayed true to Rock the Vote’s mission, and could be shared virally.

In addition to the brand and campaign assets, we developed the creative for one of the largest ever digital outdoor campaigns with over 1 billion impressions. We also created an iPad app where young people have the opportunity to make the campaign their own by choosing a “We Will” statement and posting it alongside a picture of themselves. To support Rock the Vote’s 2012 cross-country college Road Trip bus tour, we designed “We Will Vote” pledge cards, t-shirts, pins and stickers. With a compelling brand in place, Rock the Vote and TaskForce brought together a dynamic set of best-in-class youth marketing agencies to get involved in the campaign including The Pvblic Foundation and The Judge Group (outdoor), BMF Media (events), Team Epiphany (social media), Cobra Snake (photography), and many others.

All Above All

“Apartment One really listened to our unique needs and dove in with deep passion and commitment. The result was a concept and brand that is vibrant, innovative and uplifting. But most importantly, their creative hit the bullseye with our target audience. We now have a foundation for launching a powerful new campaign that is energizing our base in unprecedented ways.”

Margaret Conway, President, Conway Strategic

Project Details

All Above All is a campaign that unites organizations and individuals to build support to lift the bans that deny abortion coverage. Their vision is to restore public insurance coverage so that every woman, regardless of her income, can access affordable, safe abortion care when she needs it. Margaret Conway and Chrissy Faessen of Conway Strategic entrusted us with the mission of developing the name, creative concept, and visual brand language for the campaign.

We developed a name for this campaign that elevates the dialogue to focus on the social justice and equal rights component of the issue and specifically that all women should have the equal ability and access to make her own decisions. We looked to create a name that was aspirational, inclusive, and inspired people, specifically Millenials, to get involved and take action. From the foundation of this name and our supporting messaging such as Dare to Declare, Amend to Defend and Brave, United, Equal, we developed a visual brand language that spoke to individual empowerment for collective change in the use of selfie photography and hand brush stroke typography. We also developed a stylized asterisk in brush stroke as a design device that could be used to bring a deeper level of communication to the campaign and allow for more specific messaging on the issue. Looking to speak to our target audience of Millenials, it was essential that the campaign feel fresh and vital and so we chose a bright, neon green as the core brand color alongside black and white.

All Above All has engaged supporters across the country and continues the work of this multi-year effort to make critical policy change.

Future Fortified

“Apartment One has been an invaluable partner from day one, bringing the Future Fortified brand to life from concept to launch. The team takes the time to listen and collaborate, bringing their creativity, fresh approach, and attention to the smallest details to each and every project.”

Adrianna Logalbo, Executive Director, Future Fortified

Project Details

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), funded largely by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is an international organization working to end global malnutrition through a market-based, sustainable solution: home fortification packets that provide the essential nutrients to give birth and raise healthy children. Along with our partners at TaskForce, we developed GAIN’s first-ever national fundraising and awareness campaign, aimed at engaging American moms, grassroots activists, and policymakers.

We conceived and developed the name, brand identity, and touch points across print, digital, consumer merchandise, and packaging. In the branding and campaign, we celebrate the power of this small solution and the impact each human action can make to end global malnutrition. We developed a brand voice and visuals to be both empowering and accessible to our core audience. Included in the graphic language is a system of blank white boxes that allows individuals to make their own marks on the campaign–and on the future.

Poppin

“I have worked with the team from Apartment One for many years. They are highly professional, organized and deliver a terrific work product. As a result, they are an extremely valued relationship.”

Ken Seiff, Co-Founder, Poppin

Project Details

Shouldn’t the tools of our trades be as smart and vibrant as the work they help us to produce? Entrepreneurs Ken Seiff (founder of Bluefly) and Chris Burch (cofounder of Tory Burch) saw an opportunity in the marketplace for high-design, affordable office products. And with Poppin, they launched their mission to bring happy back to the office.

We crafted the 360-degree brand experience for Poppin from the ground up. We recognized the need for potent messaging and smile-inducing visuals, and brought this idea to life across various touch points from the core brand identity to product ideation, Web design, and product packaging. We set the foundation and then collaborated with the internal Poppin team who implemented and developed new and exciting applications for the brand including the awesome shipping boxes below.

Soon after its launch, Poppin was celebrated in Inc. and Fast Company magazines and on Gilt.com and Daily Candy.

Swirl

“Apartment One is more than a creative agency; they are a co-visionary, a partner in crime, and a lifetime brand champion. They want your business to succeed and are willing to put all of their talent, experience, and commitment to work for that goal. You feel that they are your in-house creative organization, your colleagues, and your partners. Because they are. And that is awesome.”

Eve Epstein, Creative Director, Swirl

Project Details

Swirl is an online private-sale site created in partnership with DailyCandy, offering clothing and accessories from the world’s best designers at special members-only prices. We were tasked with creating an online boutique that felt familiar to loyal DailyCandy readers but had its own unique voice. We worked with Eve Epstein, Swirl’s Creative Director, to develop the brand, website, packaging and collateral.

We chose floating cards, which emulated pieces of paper, to give the site a hand-done feel–while at the same time organizing the various featured sales and brands. We asked illustrator Miss Capricho to create custom illustrations for applications across the site and packaging. It was essential that both the design and user experience made shopping at Swirl an inviting, exciting, and easy experience from beginning to end.  We collaborated with our user experience partner, Tamara Adlin, to develop special features to achieve this; for example, the “My Sizes” feature automatically sorts products on the site to the customer’s measurements.

We sought to create special moments across all the brand’s touch points that would feel as authentic and heart-warming as the DailyCandy brand we know and love.

Brandon Hidalgo, CEO of the Great Courses, wished to revitalize the brand, expanding its appeal to a wider audience while maintaining the trust of its core consumer.

We did a full-scale digital and print redesign that included packaging, catalogs, advertisements, and marketing e-mails, We designed a new logo and visual identity that retained the core attributes from the brand’s legacy while creating a more sophisticated and contemporary look and feel. The Greenwich Hotel

“I have never met a group so eager to explain each element of a project in detail. You’ve left no doubt that you stand behind and believe in everything you do. This is any client’s dream, and an intangible that will take Apartment One to great places in 2012 and far beyond.”

Kai Gilsey, The Greenwich Hotel

Project Details

The Greenwich Hotel, Robert DeNiro’s 88-room luxury property in TriBeCa NYC, is the premier destination for the discerning traveler. Mr. DeNiro built the hotel with incredible attention to detail, using the finest materials and sourcing exquisite décor for his one-of-a-kind rooms, common spaces, and the renowned Shibui Spa.

Our intention was to bring the level of detail and sophistication at the heart of the brand to its key collateral in print and on the Web. We added personal touches to items like the keycard envelope, which features images of old-fashioned keys and is rubber-stamped with the guest’s room number at check-in. We designed the Welcome Kit, which includes the hotel’s guest directory and room-service menu, and we refined the logo, corporate stationery, business cards, and other printed materials. With Shibui Spa’s director, China Paradelo, we revamped the spa menu and collateral. Our latest project is the design of the Drawing Room, the hotel’s blog and a go-to resource for the neighborhood‘s visitors and locals.

The Greenwich Hotel has been featured many times in the press, most notably in Vanity Fair, Bazaar Japan, and Travel & Leisure.

Gather

“Finding a creative partner that not only brings your brand to life, but is as passionate about your vision as you are, is truly rare. Through Apartment One's unique ability to listen, explore, design and produce, Gather, as a brand and a company, has grown beyond our wildest expectations.”

Simon Isaacs, Founder & CEO, Gather

Project Details

Gather builds brands and marketing campaigns for the social good. Led by Simon Isaacs, a leading thinker in cause-marketing and grassroots movement building, Gather serves as an external chief-marketing officer working intimately with the world’s leading nonprofits, foundations and corporations to build and run some of the largest and most impactful campaigns for social good.

Simon was interested in a simple, straight-forward yet impactful identity for this new venture. The logotype conveys a sense of movement and change and the industrial, hardworking letterforms imbues a feeling of strength and reliability; the combined qualities at the foundation of Gather.  We intentionally kept a minimal color palette to highlight the natural textures of the application materials and supporting imagery.

We designed Gather’s first holiday gift, a custom labeled bottle of maple syrup and greeting card, inspired by Simon’s roots in Vermont. The theme of the gift was sweet new beginnings — a wish for his friends, colleagues, and clients as well as a nod to the launch of Gather. We have been honored to partner with Gather on many incredible projects including Beespace, Aeras, Future Fortified, and Rock the Vote.

Soul Kitchen

“Apartment One. Their slogan should be, We Deliver. They knocked it out of the ball park for us.”

Jon Bon Jovi

Project Details

Soul Kitchen is a “community restaurant” in Red Bank, New Jersey, developed with passion, dedication, and vision by Dorothea and Jon Bon Jovi. The Kitchen, an overhaul of the traditional soup-kitchen concept, is a place where anyone can come and enjoy a hot, nutritious meal in a warm, welcoming setting. Diners have the option of paying a small donation or volunteering their time in the Kitchen in exchange for the meal.

We were tasked by Dorothea and Jon to develop a vibrant, expressive brand-identity system that would encapsulate their mission and appeal to a diverse audience. We created an aspirational motto, Hope Is Delicious, and a brand manifesto that speaks to the ideals and intentions behind the Kitchen. We created bilingual menus, receipt holders, and other collateral with a soulful hand-done type style, and we carried that style and feeling to the website.

Soul Kitchen opened its doors in October 2011 to a warm and welcoming community and
incredible media support.

Lupe Fiasco

“We wanted to make a social statement with this record, highlighting the things that I wanted to see changed in the world. I didn’t want anything to cloud the message so we kept it really simple and iconic.”

Lupe Fiasco

Project Details

Revolutionary and incendiary Grammy award-winning hip hop artist Lupe Fiasco asked us to create the campaign to support his third album, LASERS, which was inspired by a manifesto that calls on fans to take steps towards positive change. LASERS, an acronym for Love Always Shines Every time Remember to Smile, is also a symbolic representation of his fans, whom he sees as illuminating beams that can cut through the darkness of hate and ignorance.

Our challenge was to translate this message into an iconic, thought-provoking visual statement. We developed a multi-layered concept with a white neon sign saying LOSERS on which we spray painted an “a” over the “o,” changing the word to LASERS. The action of changing LOSERS to LASERS was a empowering gesture that spoke to the transformative moment of rebellion, agency and empowerment.

LASERS was released to critical acclaim in March 2011, debuting at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and on iTunes. The album art was featured in Print magazine and on multiple design blogs.

A Cup of Jo

“I was absolutely floored by the level of professionalism, humor, intelligence and talent they brought to every step of the project. They listened closely to my thoughts and goals, paid great attention to every single detail and are true masters of their craft. To say they knocked it out of the park would be an understatement.”

Joanna Goddard, A Cup of Jo

Project Details

With over one million unique visitors per month, Joanna Goddard’s blog, A Cup of Jo, has attracted loyal viewers and media attention with her authentic, down-to-earth voice and her fresh curatorial eye. Covering a range of topics including fashion, beauty, design, relationships, motherhood, and travel, A Cup of Jo has garnered accolades from Forbes (“Top 10 Lifestyle Websites for Women”), Babble (“50 Best Design Blogs for Moms”), and Lucky Magazine, which called it “the blog read by the entire fashion and beauty industry.”

Joanna sought a redesign that would make the site more consistent with her personal aesthetic while retaining the warmth and relatability her viewership has come to associate with the blog. Her goal was to be not only a destination for unique and engaging content but an online haven of contemporary calm and beauty as well. To achieve those aims, we focused on creating a well-crafted typographic hierarchy and instituted a palette of warm neutrals and muted pastels for an effect that’s chic and feminine but not girly or cute. The primary graphic moment on the site is reserved for the iconic header image, which reflects Joanna’s playful spirit and approachability. Additionally, we refined the user experience by introducing vertical categories in the top navigation to allow visitors to access archived content more easily—or simply peruse the latest posts.

We’re thrilled with the outcome of this redesign and we relished the opportunity to work with such a strong, beloved voice in online content.

The Happiness Project

“Working with Apartment One has been a joy. It's such a pleasure to work with people who have the highest standards, who really know their stuff, who work professionally, and who want to make things beautiful.”

Gretchen Rubin, Author, The Happiness Project

Project Details

Gretchen Rubin, New York Times best-selling author of The Happiness Project and the upcoming Happier at Home, wanted to create consistency across the multiple touch points of her rapidly growing The Happiness Project brand.  Gretchen was referred to us by our dear friend and collaborator on this project, Jacqueline Schmidt of Screech Owl Design, who created the illustrations featured on the new site design.

We developed an extended brand language for The Happiness Project built on the original book cover design, utilizing its typography, color palette and graphic elements to create a new web experience. Implementing new structure, organization and hierarchy, we reorganized the content on the site to make it more accessible, navigable, and digestible. Gretchen’s blog posts, the heart of her site, are now showcased front and center while other content is organized into modules that can be easily updated.

In addition to creating cohesion among The Happiness Project brand extensions, we’ve also built a foundation and infrastructure for the brand’s future growth. Gretchen reports that she’s received raves on the new “sharper, cleaner” design from her fan base.

momfilter

“When we called Apartment One, we knew we were going to get great design and a stellar site. What we didn't know was that we were going to have the most fun collaboration in our careers, or that we were going to make such great friends who have become like family. We felt (and still do feel) like they are as invested in our success as we are.”

Yolanda Edwards and Pilar Guzmán, Co-Founders, Momfilter

Project Details

Pilar Guzmán and Yolanda Edwards, formerly of the beloved Cookie and now of Martha Stewart Living, wanted to provide a go-to source for the best advice and products for moms, while honoring mothers are women first. Momfilter was a natural fit and evolution for them, with their access to a wealth of information on issues that really matter to moms and to a community of contributors that were excited to share their knowledge and experience.

Pilar and Yolanda approached us to develop their vision and their ideals into a brand and website
in line with their vision for Momfilter: nothing too fussy or flourished. Paul Rand and iconic Swiss designers were our primary inspiration; we created Momfilter’s logotype by utilizing a classic Swiss font, Helvetica, and subtly softening it with a lowercase “m” and “f”. We kept the elements clean and straightforward—to showcase the beautiful photography and inviting copy—and paid keen attention to detail. As a nod to the mom inside the woman, a crayon line separates each section, with a different color delineating each category.

In early 2011, Momfilter launched to much fanfare from the mom and blogger community.

Logomarks

“The principal role of a logo is to identify, and simplicity is its means. Its effectiveness depends on distinctiveness, visibility, adaptability, memorability, universality, and timelessness.”

Paul Rand, Graphic Designer

Project Details

Logomarks are the cornerstone of a brand’s visual identity. They are the simplest form of communication — distilling the complexity of a company, product, or service to a visual symbol that embodies its personality, values, and characteristics. Over the years, we have had the opportunity to work with many corporations, organizations, and individuals to develop this core foundational asset from which a dynamic and robust visual brand language can grow.

Spotster

“Apartment One is more than a creative agency; they are a full fledged partner for your business. Their work reflects an intimate understanding of your brand, your customer experience, and your business. They bring a remarkable commitment to do whatever it takes to reach an incredible outcome.”

Adam Weiss, CEO, Spotster

Project Details

Spotster takes on every New Yorker’s perennial question: What should we do tonight?

CEO Adam Weiss simplifies the answer with a website and mobile app that connects people with activities they love based on date, location, mood and interest, expert recommendations, or even friends’ plans.

We built the brand and digital experience from the ground up, focusing on straight forward, genial design embodied by the logo’s rounded type and stylized icon. We created an intuitive visual system that lets the user easily scan the list of events to find one that piques his or her interest, supporting the site’s goal of connecting people quickly and effortlessly with events, activities, and experiences they love.

Spotster is gaining members rapidly, and we continue to work on new features. Stay tuned for more.
